On March 4, there will be two country premieres of works by Outi Tarkiainen which are deeply connected to nature and motherhood.
The Ring of Fire and Love will receive its German premiere with Hessisches Staatsorchester Wiesbaden and Anna-Maria Helsing. Tarkiainen explores not only natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and solar eclipses who are related to fire, but also the pain a woman feels while giving birth.
Sinfonieorchester Basel under the baton of Pekka Kuusisto will perform the Swiss premiere of The Rapids of Life at Stadtcasino Basel. The work was composed shortly after Tarkiainen gave birth to her third child. “The form of the work imitates the physiological delivery and its different stages,” notes Tarkiainen, “carried along by the ever-shifting waves.” It is dedicated to the memory of Kaija Saariaho.
