Semperoper Dresden presents a new production of Hans Abrahamsen’s opera The Snow Queen with six performances from December 7, 2025 to January 8, 2026.
The Snow Queen tells the story of Kay and Gerda, two children with a deep and innocent friendship. When a shard of a cursed mirror lodges in Kay’s eye, his heart turns to ice, and he becomes blind to the beauty around him. Enchanted and abducted by the mysterious Snow Queen, he is taken to her distant ice palace. Gerda embarks on a dangerous journey to rescue him.
The Snow Queen continues Abrahamsen’s artistic inspiration from winter, nature, time and snow. Themes that have inspired several of his most iconic works, including Winternacht and Schnee.
The staging is directed by Immo Karaman, with stage design by Arne Walther and costumes by Nicola Reichert. Titus Engel conducts the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Sächsischer Staatsopernchor Dresden.
