Jacob Gade’s Tango Jalousie is perhaps the most performed Danish musical work and to celebrate 100 years of Tango Jalousie, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra has invited Britta Byström to write a new orchestral work based on Gade’s music. Uendelighedsvals (Infinity Walz) premieres on August 7 at DR Koncerthuset. Byström was given free rein and created an orchestral fantasy based on two of Gade’s piano pieces: Valse Pleurante and Efterår.

About the work, Byström says:

It’s a kind of fantasy on the two waltzes, used simultaneously. I also added a musical infinity series as a quiet nod to another Danish gigant Per Nørgård who recently departed. And I even use the letters G-A-D-E as open violin strings.

The music is a meeting of past and present that brings new life to Gade’s music while gently honouring Nørgård in the year of his passing. The concert also features music by Bach, Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven, and of course ends with Tango Jalousie itself, performed by Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider as soloist.
