On May 17, Beethoven Orchester Bonn and Asya Fateyeva, conducted by Dirk Kaftan, will present the German premiere of Saivo, a concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra by Outi Tarkiainen.
The title “Saivo” originates from ancient Sami beliefs and refers to a lake with two bottoms. Beneath the visible surface lies another hidden lake: an entrance to a parallel world that mirrors our own. Tarkiainen writes: “The saxophone concerto builds sonorous timbral bridges between the effected soprano saxophone and the orchestra, and grows eventually into an illusion of another reality which is similar, yet in a peculiar way different than the world we know.”
Saivo was commissioned by Tapiola Sinfonietta and is dedicated to saxophonist Jukka Perko, who gave the world premiere in 2017.
