The Scottish Premiere of Trumpet Concerto (night-sky-blue) (2022) by Helen Grime will take place in Aberdeen on May 8 with Håkan Hardenberger and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Nodoka Okisawa, with performances in Edinburgh and Glasgow to follow on May 9 and 10. Inspired by the theme of night, and particularly nocturnal gardens, Grime’s Trumpet Concerto has been praised as “compelling and evocative” and “consistently fresh and inventive” (Jeremy Eichier, Boston Globe). Since its World Premiere by Hardenberger and the London Symphony Orchestra in 2022, it has been performed in the United States, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales will perform the piece in November of this year with Matilda Lloyd as soloist and Ivan Volkov at the podium.
A Featured Composer for 2025, more of Grime’s recent orchestral music can be heard next month at the Aldeburgh Festival, including her song cycle for soprano and orchestra Folk (2024) with Claire Booth and the Knussen Chamber Orchestra under Ryan Wigglesworth, and her regularly-performed Violin Concerto (2016) with Leila Josefowicz and the BBC Symphony under Sakari Oramo.
