Salonen's Music in The North

Salonen's Music in The North

From 13 April the Finnish Radio Symphony takes to the road conducted by principal conductor Nicholas Collon with a programme including a work they commissioned and premiered in 2021 - kínēma for solo clarinet and strings by Esa-Pekka Salonen. The five-movement concerto will be programmed alongside Symphony No 5 by Jean Sibelius. The clarinettist in kínēma will be the original soloist Christoffer Sundqvist. Performances take place in Iisalmi (April 13), Ähtäri (April 14) and Sastamalassa (April 15).

'Repertoire piece in the making, the concerto is both instantly appealing and profoundly rewarding musical item.'
Jari Kallio, Adventures in Music, 2023

Later in the month the Royal Scottish National Orchestra perform Salonen’s Nyx, conducted by Joana Carniero in Edinburgh (April 26) and Glasgow (April 27).

Nyx was commissioned in 2011 by Radio France, Carnegie Hall, Atlanta Symphony, Barbican Centre and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and lasts seventeen minutes. The work is Salonen's return to the genre of pure orchestral music since Helix (2005).

'...fabulously scored and never less than ear-tickling...'
Richard Morrison, The Times, 2015
