On December 12, the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg and conductor Anna Rakitina will perform Floodplain by American composer Ellen Reid for the first time in Germany.

In Floodplain, the composer deals with the specific area around rivers that can be both fertile and dangerous. Just as the weather transforms this piece of land, the music is transformed, too, and takes various directions.

The work was commissioned by Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra and RTÉ National Symphony. It premiered in May 2022 with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jaime Martín.

Ellen Reid is one of the most innovative artists of her generation. A composer and sound artist whose breadth of work spans opera, sound design, film scoring, ensemble and choral writing, she was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Music for her opera, p r i s m. She is inspired by music from all over the globe.
