An alternative orchestration of Flying Pictures at an Exhibition by brothers Vivan and Ketan Bhatti receives its world premiere on November 3 in the City of Culture of Galicia, Spain. Baldur Brönniman will be conducting La Real Filarmonía de Galicia.

The work was created in 2019 for a collaboration with the dance group FLYING STEPS, inspired by Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”. Vivan and Ketan Bhatti used an experimental composing method that can be best described by the term “palimpsest”. This is where the text on a manuscript has been scraped or washed off repeatedly to superimpose new writing over the fragments that remain. As a result, the original work of Mussorgsky and Ravel shimmer through this composition with varying intensity.
