Hugi Gudmundsson wins Composition of the Year at the Icelandic Music Awards for 'The Gospel of Mary'

Hugi Gudmundsson wins Composition of the Year (Classical/New Music) at this year's Icelandic Music Award for his magnificent oratorio The Gospel of Mary

The Gospel of Mary was commissioned by Hallgrimskirkja Friends of the Arts Society, Oslo International Church Music Festival & Århus Sinfonietta.

With stirring sinfonietta, choir and solo soprano, the Icelandic composer Hugi Gudmundsson has created a new oratorio that draws inspiration from a long forgotten gospel text, which challenges the established narrative surrounding the role of Mary Magdalene and in this work is unfolded in the feminist interpretation by the composer and the librettists Niels Brunse and Nila Parly.

On April 28, Dacapo Records releases The Gospel of Mary performed by Århus Sinfonietta, Schola Cantorum Reykjavicensis and soprano Berit Norbakken.
