Somewhere between the natural and the unnatural, between utopia and dystopia, we can gain perspective and find balance within and with the world around us. - Anna Thorvaldsdottir

Two masterful orchestral scores by Anna Thorvaldsdottir receive their US Premiere performances in early 2023. January 12-14, the New York Philharmonic and Santtu Matias-Rouvali unveil CATAMORPHOSIS, a 20’ composition inspired by the fragile relationship we have to our planet. Winner of the 2021 Ivors Composer Award for Large Scale Composition, CATAMORPHOSIS is commissioned by the Berliner Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Tickets can be purchased here; watch an excerpt from the world premiere below:

Thorvaldsdottir’s latest piece for orchestra, ARCHORA, is performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic on May 11-13, under the direction of Eva Ollikainen. Tickets can be purchased here. The core inspiration behind ARCHORA centers around the notion of a primordial energy, and the idea of an omnipresent parallel realm – a world both familiar and strange, static and transforming, nowhere and everywhere at the same time.  ARCHORA is commissioned by BBC Radio 3, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Klangspuren Schwaz.

Among other highlights in the months ahead are the Dutch premiere of Thorvaldsdottir’s METACOSMOS by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali on March 22, as well as performances at Dark Music Days festival in Reykjavik, Elbphilharmonie Visions festival in Hamburg and as part of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra’s seven-date tour of the UK. There will also be premieres of new works for the Danish String Quartet and flautist Claire Chase. In June, a new ballet choreographed by Wayne MacGregor to orchestral works by Thorvaldsdottir opens at The Royal Ballet in London. Later that month, Thorvaldsdottir will be a Featured Artist at the Aldeburgh Festival, which will include the UK premiere of AIŌN by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
