Peggy Glanville-Hicks

Peggy Glanville-Hicks won an international reputation as a composer, in particular for her operas, as well as providing an important voice as a critic in the mid-twentieth century.

In her 110th anniversary year, Wise Music has prepared new performance materials for Glanville-Hicks’ Meditation for Orchestra. This 12-minute work is a beautiful example of Glanville-Hicks’ celebrated output.

The Lyric Opera of Melbourne is also paying tribute to Glanville-Hicks by performing her surviving art-song compositions for voice and piano on 10 April 2022.

Much of Glanville-Hicks’ repertoire was written during her time in America in the 1940s and 1950s. Interestingly, this coincides with the time during which American composer, Florence Price was active. There are numerous opportunities to premiere the works of Florence Price in our region, including symphonies, violin concertos and a piano concerto in one movement. Price was recently nominated for an orchestral award in the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2022
