A new disc from star cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, presenting his thoughtful interpretation of the Cello Concerto by Esa-Pekka Salonen, was released in February 2022 on Alpha Classics, with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Dima Slobodeniouk.
Salonen’s monumental Cello Concerto was originally composed for Yo-Yo Ma, and given its world premiere in 2017 by the cellist under the composer’s direction with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The Times paper said of the piece “Salonen works magic with colour, and the score bursts with imaginative touches.”
There will be an opportunity to hear Altstaedt’s interpretation when he tours the Cello Concerto with Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, led by Dima Slobodeniouk on their Spring tour:
