In the 2021-2022 season, four concerts of NTR Zaterdag Matinee are dedicated to the Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen. The series kicks off on January 29 with the Dutch premiere of his Concerto for Horn and Orchestra, written for the principal horn player of Berliner Philharmoniker Stefan Dohr. The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra will play under the lead of Dima Slobodeniouk at Concertgebouw Amsterdam with soloist Stefan Dohr. The performance will be broadcasted live on NPO . The concerto had its world premiere exactly two years earlier on January 29, 2020 with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Paavo Järvi. It has been commissioned by Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker, NHK Symphony Orchestra, NTR Zaterdag Matinee, Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia.
On February 12, Barbara Hannigan will sing Abrahamsen’s groundbreaking song cycle let me tell you with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Karina Canellakis as conductor. The carefully curated concert series will prepare its climax with a selection of ensemble pieces by Hans Abrahamsen on May 14, performed by Asko|Schönberg with conductor Brad Lubman. With Wald, Winternacht and Schnee, the audience at Concertgebouw Amsterdam get introduced to the world of Abrahamsen’s intensive studies of nature, especially on the theme of snow.
The composer focus will consequently culminate in the Dutch premiere of the opera The Snow Queen by Hans Abrahamsen on June 4 2022 by Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Netherlands Radio Choir under the baton of Kent Nagano.
