“One of the leading British composers of his generation” (Gramophone), writing “music of startling beauty” (The Observer)

The music of Tarik O’Regan, the American-British composer and two-time GRAMMY® nominee, can be heard on over 40 albums. In recent years, much of the composer’s work has investigated his dual Arab and Irish heritages, ranging from pulsing and percussive guitar compositions to exquisite, soaring choral scores. O’Regan’s catalogue offers a stunning array of composition for dance creation inspiration.

This week, Oregon Ballet Theatre celebrates their return to live performance with the world premiere of Choros, created by Nicolo Fonte and featuring O’Regan’s Rai and Latent Manifest, as well as Choros by Ludovico Einaudi.

‘Choros’ means dance in the Greek language. This word occurs in the names of numerous Greek dances, which may be literally translated as dance of… or dance from…. Dance is a special class of performance that combines movement, rhythm and gesture with music, and has the unique quality of transforming space with the physical body. Whether that space is on a formal stage, the intimacy of your own bathroom or the inner sacred space of your heart, there is no more natural an expression of celebration, than to dance. Dancers need to dance and Choros was made for this moment and for these inspiring dancers to celebrate the occasion with all of you watching. — Nicolo Fonte

The composer’s most notable dance score to date is Mata Hari. His full-length commission for Dutch National Ballet, choreographed by Ted Brandsen, explores the turbulent life of the infamous Dutch spy and dancer Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. It returns to Dutch National Ballet’s repertoire in October 2021.

O’Regan collaborated with composer Nick Wales to create an intriguing musical experience for Sydney Dance Company’s production Louder Than Words.

His recent album releases include Houston Grand Opera’s production of The Phoenix; A Letter of Rights, as performed by Chamber Choir Ireland and the Irish Chamber Orchestra; and All Things Common, a portrait album by Pacific Chorale, where O’Regan was Composer in Residence for the past several seasons.

O’Regan is based in San Francisco and is newly appointed Composer in Residence with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, where he is also overseeing an ambitious new commissioning initiative.
