Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and the Signum Quartet will present a double premiere of new works by Kevin Volans in Birmingham on November 11.
bcmg has commissioned Volans’ Piano Concerto No. 4 through its Sound Investment scheme, now in its 25th year. Renowned Irish pianist Barry Douglas will be the soloist in the first performance of the virtusic 30-minute work, which will be conducted by Geoffrey Paterson.
Volans’ String Quartet No. 12 is an equally substantial work and is the latest addition in a medium for which the composer is particularly renowned – this premiere comes thirty years after the first performance of his landmark String Quartet No. 1 ‘White Man Sleeps’.
In 2008, bcmg commissioned Kevin Volans’ The Partenheimer Project, a spatially-conceived ensemble work which was performed in Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery.
