On July 7 2015, the Aurora Orchestra will give the world premiere of Augusta Read Thomas' Of Being is a Bird at Wigmore Hall in London. This pair of bird songs set to texts by Emily Dickinson will be sung by soprano Claire Booth, with Nicholas Collon conducting. Augusta Read Thomas fondly dedicates the work to Julian Anderson, who curated the Aurora Orchestra's compelling reflections on the music of poetry and the poetry of music.
While preparing Of Being is a Bird the composer "listened to every recording of Claire Booth I could find and took note of the color of every pitch in her vocal range." The audience can look forward to the triumphant second song where Thomas decided to "show off a different side of Claire Booth's voice and vocal agility." Of Being is a Bird was commissioned by Wigmore Hall with the support of André Hoffmann, president of the Fondation Hoffmann.
