Muhly to compose his second opera for the Met
As part of the Metropolitan Opera’s ongoing commitment to contemporary opera, the company has commissioned Nico Muhly to write a second opera for the Met stage. Muhly’s first opera, Two Boys, received its company premiere in 2013.

The new opera will be Marnie, based on the 1961 novel by Winston Graham, with a libretto by acclaimed playwright Nicholas Wright. The novel—famously adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock—centres on a young master thief in late 1950s England who moves from town to town, changing her identity each time. She becomes trapped when an employer catches her and, rather than turn her in, forces her to marry him, leading the two to engage in a battle of wills for her soul.
Marnie will come to the Met in 2019-20 in a production directed by Michael Mayer. A co-production with English National Opera and Dutch National Opera, Marnie will receive its world premiere in 2017 at ENO, followed by performances at DNO in 2018.
