A brand new string quartet receives its premiere on 8 October by the critically-acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet. Nominated for the Gramophone magazine Artist of the Year Award 2013, the Quartet has commissioned Brian Elias to write a String Quartet which will be premiered in Winston-Salem, USA. The Quartet follows this with performances in Iowa, USA and then the UK premiere in Manchester on 11 November.
Although the quartet is laid out in a fairly conventional four-movement plan, it is, in effect, a work in one movement, and is performed without any breaks. A set of double variations generates the thematic and harmonic material for the entire piece in its first few bars.
