Tower Catches a WaveJoan Tower is the second Schirmer/AMP composer commissioned by RIOULT, the dance company of Pascal Rioult, during the company's three-year series, "Dance to Contemporary Composers." RIOULT began its series last year with the premiere of On Distant Shores by Aaron Jay Kernis.
Pascal Rioult's choreography will combine two pieces for cello and piano by Tower: her thoughtful Trés Lent (1994) and her brisk new Catching a Wave (2012). Composer/pianist Tower will join cellist Raman Ramakrishnan in the three premiere performances by the RIOULT company.
Explains Pascal Rioult, "As I develop this new piece, I intend to abandon the structured approach I typically use when creating a dance. Instead of letting the music drive the process, I have asked the dancers to improvise in silence, responding to images and poetic references I have selected from T.S. Eliot's 'The Waste Land.' While this is a stark departure for me it is a thrilling journey for the company. To inform the score I have shared the same images and references with Joan Tower, a composer whom I've long admired."
