Danielpour's Souvenirs

On June 6, Richard Danielpour sees his new work, Souvenirs, premiered by Philippe Entremont and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra at the Mozart-Saal des Wiener Konzerthauses in Austria.

Influenced as much by his relationship with Entremont as he was by the Orchestra itself, Danielpour's work playfully explores the relationship between the old and new. Danielpour explains, "Verdi said it best when he said,'Let us look to the past and we will always be ahead.' I really believe there is something to be said for an historical continuity and a lineage of musical thought unfolding over the generations."

As the Vienna Chamber Orchestra has essentially perfected the art of the classical orchestra, Danielpour thought it would be interesting to try to write a piece that, in some way, would be like a classical symphony or a classical suite — deliberately thinking in a neo-classic way.

Souvenirs was commissioned by the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida to celebrate Philippe Entremont's 75th birthday.
