Jazz horn of the 1950s and 60s and images of the rainforest are the two contrasting influences behind a new Horn Concerto by John McCabe which will be premiered by David Pyatt (pictured) at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on February 16. The piece, which has been commissioned by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, will be conducted by Tadaaki Otaka.

Written in memory of the late horn player Ifor James, McCabe’s Horn Concerto is in a single movement which falls into several clearly defined sections, each based on the long horn solo with which the work opens and closes.

Following its premiere, the piece will be performed at Brangwen Hall, Swansea, on March 17 and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at a later date.
