Programme Note

Marrow is a miniature setting of Psalm 63. I wanted the voices divided into opposing forces: very abstract, liquid and repetitive chords pitted against long, declarative lines in the lower voices. The only time they merge is on the text “Thus have I looked for thee in holiness” and “when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips.” There is something deliberately dizzying about the repeated chords suggested by the heat-stroke delirium in the text “in a barren and dry land where no water is.”
