Programme Note

Originally composed in the summer of 1943, the Sonata in D major, Op. 94, is a versatile masterpiece that has become a staple of the wind repertoire. While famously known as Prokofiev’s sole flute sonata (and subsequently his second violin sonata), it is frequently performed in a transcription for clarinet and orchestra. Written during the composer’s wartime evacuation to Almaty and Perm, the work reflects a "new simplicity" and neoclassical clarity that stands in stark contrast to the epic, heavy scores Prokofiev was producing at the time, such as Ivan the Terrible.

The clarinet version highlights the instrument’s rich chalumeau register and its piercing brilliance in the upper range, perfectly suited to the work’s four-movement structure. The Moderato opens with a suave, lyrical theme that benefits from the clarinet’s smooth legato; the Scherzo demands acrobatic staccato and rhythmic precision; the Andante provides a dreamy, introspective space for the instrument’s more vocal qualities; and the Allegro con brio finale serves as a virtuosic romp that emphasizes the clarinet's technical agility. Because Prokofiev’s piano writing in this opus was so inherently orchestral—characterized by its symphonic scope and percussive textures—later orchestrations for the clarinet have felt like a natural evolution of the score. This "concerto" arrangement allows the work to transcend its chamber music origins, transforming it into a vibrant symphonic dialogue that showcases the clarinet as a heroic, lyrical protagonist.
