Programme Note

The drones for An Outrage can be performed by any combination of instruments or pre- recorded electronics. The drones at its premiere consisted of three melodicas, viola da gamba, viola, synthesizer, two iPhones, and a singer. It is crucial that the drones sit slightly below the texture of the voices, and that the drones never become so active that they distract from the voices. Additionally, while the drones should rise and fall in volume subtly and randomly, after the fashion of distant clouds, they should never follow the dynamics of the voices. It is also entirely possible and somewhat desirable to have the drones start, if it is convenient or sensible, long before the concert begins, as the audience enters, or during an interval.
