Programme Note
A favourite encore piece of Heifitz was the Carmen Fantasy of Franz Waxman. Robert Cohen conceived the idea of a similar piece for cello and piano and asked me to devise one as a brilliant finale for a recital he was due to give in New York in 1985.
I used the famous "Fate" motif for Cadenza - like passages linking the numbers, many not used by Waxman, in which, retaining the original keys and loyal to Bizet's musical style, I pressed the cello technique as far as I could with Robert's expert guidance. The most famous tunes I merely hint at obliquely in the final pages.
