SYNOPSIS

A young and beautiful widow, accompanied by a somewhat reluctant and puzzled maidservant, has taken up residence in her husband’s commodious tomb. She has forsworn all earthly consolations and is determined to join her husband in death. Her decline, however, is interrupted by the arrival of a handsome young soldier, who has taken time off from guarding the bodies of three recently hanged criminals. To increase her strength for the business of mourning, the widow accepts his offer of food and drink – only to find it revives her interest in the living. When the soldier is in trouble because the relatives of one of the criminals have removed a body to give it a decent burial, it is the widow who proposes a neat solution to the dilemma.
