laulasmaa (2026)

estonian for “singing land”, laulasmaa is both the village where Arvo Pärt once took his piano lessons and the place where he now lives. written during a residency at his centre, the piece pays homage to two of my favourite composers, oscillating between beethovenian pathos and pärtian sacredness. an ode to simplicity and to neotonality, it draws on the majestic and heroic character of Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto, quoted in the coda, while brushing against Pärt’s choral writing, at times monumental, at times angelic, suspending time and caressing the air with a sacred breath.

de l’estonien “terre chantante”, laulasmaa est à la fois le village où Arvo Pärt suivait jadis ses cours de piano et l’endroit où il demeure aujourd’hui. écrite en résidence en son centre, la pièce rend hommage à deux de mes compositeurs fétiches, oscillant entre le pathos beethovénien et le sacré pärtien. ode à la simplicité, à la néotonalité, elle reprend le caractère majestueux et héroïque du 5ᵉ concerto pour piano de Beethoven, notamment cité en coda, tout en flirtant avec les choeurs de Pärt, tantôt prestigieux, tantôt angéliques, suspendant le temps, caressant l’air d’un souffle sacré.
