pavane (2026)

a slow and solemn dance of the spanish Renaissance, the pavane draws its name from the peacock’s nuptial display (lat. pavo). courteous and elegant, it is an invitation to the voyage, a procession, a pageant, though not for a dead princess. in its rising conclusion, charango and strings gradually join the voices, like pilgrims entering an ancient cortège, modal, insistent, and ever shifting. each note becomes a step, a gesture, a bow, along a path suspended between time unfolding and plumage turning into movement. with each return of the motif pulses with memory and desire, a collective anticipation of an unknown elsewhere. noble and sentimental, both dance and cavalcade, the circle weaves the restless freedom of gathered solitudes.

danse lente et solennelle de la Renaissance espagnole, la pavane s’inspire de la parade nuptiale du paon, d’où elle tire son nom (lat. pavo). courtoise et élégante, elle est invitation au voyage, procession, défilé, mais pas pour une infante défunte. dans son dénouement enlevant, charango et cordes se joignent peu à peu aux voix, tels pèlerins au cortège, ancien, lancinant, modal et mouvant. chaque note devient pas, geste, révérence, sur un chemin suspendu entre le temps se déployant et le plumage se faisant marche. chaque retour du motif palpite mémoire et désir, anticipation collective d’un ailleurs inconnu. noble et sentimentale, danse et cavalcade, la ronde tisse la liberté mouvementée des solitudes rassemblées.
