Programme Note
This brass quintet, in 3 short movements, is dedicated to my sister Anne. It takes me back to a flat in Grange Road, Glenhuntly, which I shared with my sister in 1986. During that time, I started a brass quintet, sections of which were aired in student concerts, but the score left unfinished. 15 years on, I found the pencilled manuscript and in 2001 decided to complete it. In the process, I refined some small details but not beyond recognition. Perhaps typically of me, the music is both melancholy and optimistic in quality. I can remember writing the piece (I was a second year BMus student at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music) and, by date, must have written it in that flat in Glenhuntly. I remember happily co-habiting with my sister and of friends coming around. And somewhere in there, the majority of this music came about. The premiere performance was given by Lyrebird Brass Quintet at the Canberra International Music Festival, National Film and Sound Archive on 2 May 2026 (40 years on).
