Programme Note

Lili Boulanger composed D’un matin de Printemps in 1918 for piano and violin or flute, later orchestrating the work.

In this recomposition, I aimed to lift the melodies and harmonies out of the frame of her era. Drawing from both versions, I deconstructed the material, selecting moments that resonated most with me, embedding them into a new character and energy. Certain impulses led me toward newly composed material, though these always guided me back to the central themes, sometimes unfolding in a loop-like structure.

As the daughter of orchestral musicians and a former dancer, I couldn’t resist a ballet-like feel inherent to a waltz. At the same time, I found it impossible to erase a dystopian and surreal aura, in which deep worries coexist with an impulsive longing for joy that shapes our present here and now.
