Programme Note
I have long been drawn to the spiritual roots that lie beneath music across cultures. Raised within the tradition of Jewish liturgical song, I first explored the origins of my own heritage before turning, in later years, to other sacred traditions further afield, such as raga, maqam and gamelan. HELIX takes its points of departure from two such traditions in particular: raga and Klezmer. Within the piece, Martin Fröst takes on something of the role of a preacher, his solo clarinet leading the way in long, declamatory phrases. The orchestra responds in turn, building towards moments of climax, collapsing, and gathering itself once more around the soloist's voice.
