Programme Note
Composed between 1916 and 1919, Tanz, Op. 7 by Wilhelm Grosz, was one of his first major works for orchestra. It was premiered in January 1921 together with the Serenade, Op. 5 as ‘two fantastic pieces for large orchestra’ by the Staatskapelle Dresden, followed by performances by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Vienna, conducted by Felix Weingartner. Both works are full of late-Romantic charm due to their unusual orchestration and complex harmonies.
