Programme Note

Like many other works since the late 1950s, the Sonata capricciosa was composed during Takács's time teaching in the USA, where he was inspired by the country's excellent wind instrument schools and the resulting demand for suitable performance literature. Here, the tuba showcases both its cantabile and parodic abilities, even allowing itself a brief quote from 'Rigoletto'.
