Programme Note

The black version of a commedia dell'arte story: the pantomime tells of Pierrette, who is married to Arlecchino even though she loves Pierrot. He commits suicide when his lover visits him in her wedding dress with a myrtle wreath and veil. Returning to the exuberantly celebrating wedding party, Pierrette - visible only to - has the apparition of Pierrot with her wedding veil. When Arlecchino misses his bride's veil at , she leads him to Pierrot's room. Locked up by Arlecchino with the dead, a kind of mystical union takes place. Delirious, Pierrette dances around her lover until her strength fades and she sinks to her death at his side.
