Programme Note

Tituba, an African-American slave, was one of the first accused in the Salem witch trials in 1692, in which 20 people were executed by the Puritans in New England in the USA on charges of witchcraft.

The tension between contrasting emotional states forms the dramatic character of the piece, which is dominated by short melodic gestures. The feelings of fear and despair are repeatedly transformed into brief moments of hope and faith in a better future, which is depicted above all with the help of subtle transitions between the lively, ever-changing harmonic fields.
