Programme Note
A Spider’s Tapestry sets a poem by Miranda Latham-Jackson about Arachne, the skilled young weaver in Greek mythology who was turned into a spider by the goddess Athena. The work is scored for a solo quartet of singers (the voice of Arachne herself), SATB choir and saxophone quartet (whose music often depicts the animals featured in Arachne’s vibrant tapestries). Structurally, the work falls loosely into two halves. At first, Arachne’s voice is presented in rhythmic unison (with polyphonic, canonic writing in the choir), before this united body splits and frays, as I imagine it might if one were transformed into an eight-legged beast against one’s will.
