Programme Note

Composer note
The title of this piece is the title of a poem by U.S. Native American poet Joy Harjo. The musical letters of the words of this poem appear as notes in part 1.

The poem itself is difficult to describe. It is musical, conjures up horses as well as various facets of the world of an Indian woman and the conflicts she experiences in her and other communities. It contains aspects full of vitality, sometimes disjointed and erratic, but always related to horses. The music tries not so much to present the content of the text as to show appreciation for it.
