Programme Note
Michel Ocelot's Azur et Asmar (2006) is a new animated masterpiece that has marked an entire generation. Inspired by the Tales of One Thousand and One Nights, Azur et Asmar tackles social issues such as social inequality and the discovery of foreign cultures through the story of two foster brothers - Azur the blond-haired, blue-eyed boy and Asmar the dark-haired, black-eyed boy - brought up by the same woman in a green, flower-filled country. Abruptly separated by life at the end of childhood, they are both driven by the desire to find the Djinn Fairy and embark on an epic journey full of lessons that will reunite the two brothers.
Gabriel Yared's original score, specially rearranged by Robin Melchior for Azur et Asmar en ciné-concert, is performed by the Yellow Socks Orchestra, Mohamed Najem (Ney flute) and Yousef Zayed (Oud), in perfect synchronisation with the film's big screen projection. It is a great fabulous opportunity for the whole family to rediscover this touching tale.
