Programme Note

Blindness is heard here as it was written for the film. It is one of the few instances in Bernard Herrmann's film music that features an extended, lyrical part for a soloist. It is also novel in that it has a form akin to that found in concert music — it could easily be the exposition of a sonata movement — which is usually difficult to achieve given the many demands classical film narratives make of incidental music. Most fortunate of all, it gives the viola d'amore a rare — and welcome — opportunity to return to the concert hall.
