Programme Note

The Magic Island is a short orchestral work inspired by Dr Catherine Crock and her team at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. It was written especially for the Hush Music Foundation’s CD of the same title in a project designed to provide a positive environment for children recovering in hospital. The Magic Island imagines a place beyond the walls of a hospital ward – an Island of hope, playfulness and optimism.

The Magic Island was premiered by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ben Northey, in December 2013. It is recorded on Hush vol. 13 and 14.

Live performances of this work are intended to reflect its original context – ie a work for children or with a therapeutic purpose in mind.
