Attmed (2026)
(for Hardanger Fiddle, Violin (one player) and Orchestra )

Attmed was commissioned by Ragnhild Hemsing, a musician who moves naturally between the worlds of classical music and Norwegian folk tradition. The work is composed for solo violin, Hardanger fiddle, and orchestra, with the soloist performing both instruments. The Hardanger fiddle, Norway’s national folk instrument, resembles the violin but is distinguished by its sympathetic strings, which create a characteristic resonant and shimmering sound.

The title Attmed is a Norwegian word meaning “beside” or “together.” In many ways, the work consists of two solo concertos interwoven, where the two solo instruments have relatively little in common: the violin lines are classical, almost Romantic in character, while the Hardanger fiddle parts draw inspiration from Norwegian folk music (sections of the Hardanger fiddle part are inspired by the folk tune “Huldrelått frå Vang”). Toward the end, the two instruments move closer to one another, and material begins to gradually flow from one instrument to the other.
