Sorores (2024)
(The Sisters)- Chester Music Ltd (World)
Commissioned by Britten Sinfonia with support from the Vaughan Williams Foundation
Programme Note
Sorores (‘Sisters’ in Latin) is an 8-minute work for vibraphone and strings. It is in four connected sections, with a short cadenza for the vibraphone in the final part.
i) Adagietto grazioso
Vibraphone melody with string accompaniment
ii) Andante
Vibraphone melody with pizzicato string accompaniment
iii) Con moto
A rising and falling 'musical wave' in the strings, with more percussive music in the vibraphone
iv) Tempo I
Recapitulation/vibraphone cadenza
At its first performance, Sorores was preceded and followed by the music of John Tavener and Arvo Pärt, including Pärt’s Fratres (‘Brothers’). I adore works by these two composers and wanted to see if I could find my own way of similarly writing an instrumental work for a large acoustic, especially as the premiere took place in a cathedral.
