Programme Note
Pictures of the Floating World is an interdisciplinary work inspired by the Japanese ukiyo-e (translated by ‘pictures of the floating world’), specifically the shunga genre. The name of this genre, also known as Japanese erotic art, literally means ‘image of spring,’ an euphemism for sexual intercourse.
In Pictures of the Floating World, 7 original prints are represented in 7 interwoven movements:
Preludio del deseo (Negai no itoguchi)
Escenas del barrio del placer (Eawase kingahishō)
Poema de la almohada (Utakamura)
El amor interrumpe las labores de costura
Juegos acuáticos (Mizuasobi)
Languidecer de amor (Kinoe no Komatsu)
Garceta bajo la lluvia (Uchu no sagi)
Through sonic and visual poetry, this work aims to create aesthetic and conceptual connections between Western imagery and that of ukiyo-e. This artistic genre depicts a hedonistic urban lifestyle developed in Japan during the Edo period (17th and 19th centuries).
