Programme Note

This piece is dedicated to Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny, co-composers of The First Circle. Having analysed this piece for my Masters thesis some years before, I had long wanted to write a work which took The First Circle as its starting point. In the end, I deviated away from that model in a number of ways, but there are still comparable aspects. The use of a consistent pulse, redefined by varied groupings of either 2 or 3 quavers, together with a middle–section improvisation that leads back to a recapitulation defines the structure of the work in similar fashion.

The title is indirectly an anagram: from
The First Circle, I was able to derive 'Electric Shrift'. I substituted shrift, with its synonym, confession, and thus arrived at Electric Confession. While that was fun (and entirely arbitrary), I do feel that the title appropriately reflects my homage to Mays and Metheny’s wonderful piece.

The work was written specifically for Ken Murray, who also assisted with the preparation of the pre–recorded CD part and the guitar setup.

Reviews

"At the beginning of Electric Confession Ken Murray’s guitar sneaks in over layers of keyboard contrapuntal movement and statement with extended and at times powerfully beautiful improvisations. This track is dedicated to Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays with particular reference to Metheny’s seminal work The First Circle (1984). Greenbaum’s composition echoes this with complex cross rhymical textures and strident guitar lines overhead. This piece, with contrasts including pause and stillness, keyboard blasts and Farrugia’s drive, is the standout track of the collection.”

“Many people ask me what the future of classical music looks like in a world full of electronic music. So it makes my life easier when an album like this comes along and I can point people in the direction of composers such as Stuart Greenbaum.

Working within Melbourne’s contemporary classical music scene since his early days as a student, Greenbaum continues to explore the world of music through all mediums. What I particularly find interesting about this album is that they are all works originally written 20 years ago. They are fresh yet vintage in their sound worlds, with Greenbaum using everything from live instruments through to a classic Yamaha CX5M Music Computer from 1987. Followers of his music will remember Greenbaum’s The Final Hour in 2019. Electric Confession clearly shows listeners how Greenbaum melded these early experiments in electronic composition with a strong foundation in Western classical music to create that 2019 masterpiece.

Electric Confession
is an album for anyone who likes fusion music; it takes rhythmic ideas from one place and interweaves it with melodic ideas, all built upon a harmonic resonance that can be recognised as Greenbaum’s singular style.”
