Programme Note
Wild Land for nonet and string orchestra was written at the suggestion of the violinist Rudens Turku and commissioned by the patron Ursula Heinsberg from Berlin, to whom the work is also dedicated.
In recent years, I've been to South Africa a lot and in 2020 I happened to get my hands on a photo book by the photographer couple Beverly and Peter Pickford in the Western Cape, taking photos of unspoilt nature in all parts of the world. In 2022, I met the Pickfords in person in South Africa and had a long conversation about their work.
My composition is strongly inspired by the Pickfords' photographs and ideas.
