Param Vir: Contrapulse
Contrapulse, composed in 1985, is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, cello, piano (many of the performers playing other instruments of the same family) and for a considerable battery of percussion, which, apart from the usual instruments, also includes Scooter Horn, Anvils and Football Referee Whistles, some of these being played by the pianist.
Cross pulses (polyrhythms) provide the scaffolding for diverse - often simultaneous - rhythmic and dramatic scenarios. Contrapulse unfolds a musical narrative that lunges erratically between cantabile linear continuity and crazier manifestations.
