        Rupert Bawden opened the concert by conducting the premiere of his The Donkey Dance. Bawden has a fine ear for unusual sonorities (often provided by the addition of an accordion, in the expert hands of James Crabb) and his three scènes de ballet are notable for gestures both entertaining and arresting.
