Programme Note

The music is arranged for choir (SATB) with piano accompaniment. Occasionally the women’s parts are divided into two groups each. The sopranos and altos together are also, in a couple of places, divided into three rather than two groups. The groups should be chosen by pitch of voice, and the three groups should have equal weight with each other. When two alternative octaves are given in any single part, the singers should choose the most comfortable pitch; ideally all pitches will be covered.

In general, the dynamic markings will guide the balance of forces. Please note that it is not expected or desired that all parts singing at one time should necessarily have the same weight. Solo parts, when suggested, are optional and may be shared around the whole choir. The sound effects in the voices may be played for fun, though never to get in the way of text or music.

This music was originally commissioned by The Hulme Grammar School, Oldham, to celebrate its centenary in May 1995. That setting was written for a large choir of upper voices. The first performance was given by the Hulme Singers (under the direction of Mrs Rosemary Broadbent) and the original work was dedicated to this fine choir.

The first arrangement of the work for SATB choir and piano was made in the summer of 2022, commissioned by my sister, Liz Stoll to celebrate her birthday. The first performance was given by the London Pro Arte Choir, conducted by Tom Winpenny, on 17 June 2023 at St Michael’s Church, Mill Hill, London. That arrangement was affectionately dedicated to Liz.
