On February 20 the spanish composer Elena Mendoza brought an 80-minute premiere of exquisite creativity to the Teatro Real (...) The music of La ciudad de las mentiras is a curious mixture, delicate yet menacing, pulsating yet shooting, exotic and jazzy, with strains of Stravisky and of Ligeti. Despite the Libretto's oppressive melancholy, there is also wonderful musical humor in the percussion: domino tiles make rhythmical tapping sounds on tables; a waiter scrapes cutlery, plates and bottles at the bar counter.
Gerard Mortier was a great admirer and supporter of the innovative and brave musical theatre. He would have appreciated La ciudad de las mentiras. This work expands the idea of what the 21st century opera might be – La ciudad de las mentiras is an impressive, spectacular, gripping, at times surreal theatrical experience, where the human voice is only one of many available means of expression.
