Programme Note

CUT I-III ties in stylistically and aesthetically with my cycle Solo xfach (for Joseph Beuys), which I have been working on since 1988.

Since 2000 I have been interested in the works of the French philosopher Jean Guitton. This has had a lasting influence on my composition. The duration of each part, which can be performed individually or simultaneously, is five minutes. In simultaneous performances, the individual parts are successively ‘layered’, comparable to collage techniques in the visual arts.

CUT I-III was commissioned by the Dresden Centre for Contemporary Music and for the Ensemble Modern.
